Two trees mentioned in the Garden of Eden were the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Because Adam and Eve partook of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, they were separated from the Tree of Life and the presence of God. Consequently, in order for man to once again dwell in the presence of God, a third tree was necessary.
